Dr. Lloyd Jacobs, the University's president, decided to write a column of his own, in which he said that Crystal Dixon's "comments do not accord with the values of the University of Toledo." Moreover, he saw fit to initiate disciplinary proceedings against her.
See if you can find the irony in this excerpt from Dr. Jacobs' column:
Disability, race, age or sexual orientation are not included in any decision making process nor the evaluation of worth of any individual at this university.
Do you notice anything missing from his list? Apparently, while "sexual orientation" doesn't affect the University of Toledo's decision making process, the free expression of religion does!
I urge you to read Crystal Dixon's column. You will see that she was not writing as a representative of the University of Toledo. On the contrary, she was writing as a religious person describing her world view and expressing her faith. And for that, she is publicly rebuked and internally disciplined.
So much for freedom of speech and religion at the University of Toledo.
Shame on you, Dr. Jacobs. You have brought shame on the University of Toledo as well as yourself.
And thank you, Crystal Dixon!
